Now US denies terrorist cells in Venezuela

US Ambassador to Venezuela Charles Shapiro claims a US State Department report alleging that Lebanese Hezbollah terrorists are operating in Venezuela was "misinterpreted" ... at least, according to National Assembly (AN) Foreign Affairs committee president Julio Montoya.

"Shapiro denies that the USA has evidence that any terrorist cells are operating in Venezuela what the USA wants from Venezuela is more intelligence collaboration in pursuing capital for funding terrorist cells."

Shapiro had told the committee that the USA is against any attempt to change the government outside of the constitutional framework, but commented that the National Assembly (AN) has the right to amend the Constitution.

The Ambassador is also reported as saying that it would be a good idea for Venezuela to convene a third and outside actor to the Venezuelan government’s national dialogue initiative.  (Wednesday, June 5, 2002)
