Reality Check II

October 09, 2000

Sir/Madam,

Regrettably, the national tendency to elevate mediocrity to our standard of achievement has also now hit our football efforts. Why did we not aim to complete this round in a position of complete dominance and stamp fear into the hearts of our final round opponents and win us respect in the footballing world? Why just settle for the fact that we are already in that round of six?

I suppose some of those who were contemplating brushing up on their Korean have had some second thoughts after our embarrassing drubbing at the feet of the Mexicans yesterday.

But the bigger worry is our penchant to aim for less than excellence, and somehow feel comfortable.

After conceding no goals in current round of competition, 7-0 in one game must be more than a psychological setback.

This unnecessary falter was carefully prepared. No one would have thought that we were serious about drawing the game far less defeating the Mexicans on home soil having learnt that our team would arrive in the high altitude of Azteca the day before the game.

Nor, would have hearts been emboldened by the fact that the only warm-up game was a trouncing of a representative Tobago eleven (no disrespect to our Tobago players intended).

I would hope that before, and way before the commencement of the round of six which includes five other countries who have all made it to World Cup finals previously that our football top honchos would find it possible to arrange warm-up games against top class international competition.

This rounds we don't hear complaints about lack of funds. So, lets not create new excuses.

Let mediocrity be but a distant bad memory. Let us show the world that T&T (or at least all our sportsmen) can and does aim only for the highest standards of performance and achievement.
