Different Strokes

June 01, 1999

Sir/Madam,

The departure of the WI team from the World Cup has rekindled debate about our cricket and what needs to be done.

It has certainly exposed that the "recovery" against Australia in the recent home series was pretty much a knee jerk reaction to the public outcry.

The incredible management decisions from the selection of certain players on the touring party, to the selections for individual games, apparent lack of appreciation for the need for certain strategic and tactical approaches to several games and the continuous letting go of strong positions during the opposition innings continue to plague our cricket.

The lack of appreciation for the amount of planning that goes into the modern game is so much more apparent now, when that approach is seen in the successes of the non-testplaying countries in this world cup.

While we continue to hope for the best, the others are planning for the best.

West Indies cricket will reach no closer to the top that at present until the need for modern management from the level of the WICB to the tour management to the captain is really appreciated and acted on.

Yes, those will be quick to call me unpatriotic, our boy Brian has, as on several occasions in the past, shown poor captaincy (on-field management) in several decisions which have let teams off the hook and put us in danger of defeat.

Let the honest knowledgeable cricket supporters explain that.

West Indian people must demand no less than we see being obviously put into the game by South Africa, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, etc.

At the same time we must give praise where due.

Ridley Jacobs, Walsh and Ambrose continue to excel.

It's time for West Indies to approach this game in the clinical scientific fashion that our opponents do. Nothing less will do.
