War and Terror: Bush Administration Leaves Pinocchio Behind In The Dust

    US Foreign Policyby Ben Roberts

Reliable sources has confided to me that a well known global figure is consumed by intense jealousy at the Bush Administration. It goes without saying that this source wishes to remain anonymous(hey if Team Bush and the media can cite anonymous sources from everything to the stock market scandal to terrorist threat warnings and Colin Powell’s Iraqi defectors, so can I.) Might this figure be British Prime Minister Tony Blair, jealous that his nation’s empire has long since faded away, and now America and Bush, his former colonial child, is in the driver’s seat trying to dictate imperialism and world domination? Or is it Russian President, Vladimir Putin, miffed that he and his former Soviet Union are no longer standing toe to toe with America, trading punches for super power status, leaving the US as the world’s only superpower? Is it possible that we are talking of France’s President Jacques Chirac or Germany’s leader Gerhardt Schroeder, both jealous that America is hogging the global spotlight at Europe’s expense?

Or might we be talking of close to home. Say former President Clinton, jealous that warlord Bush has an enviable popularity rating he could only dream about while in office? What about an on-again-off-again-President-to-be Al Gore, jealous that he was ripped off in Florida from going to the big house? Can it be one of the many ambitious presidential aspirants intent on making the White House their home, such as Senator John Edwards, Senator Bob Kerry, Senator Bob Graham, Al Sharpton, Senator Dick Gephardt, or Senator Joseph Lieberman? Okay the suspense is over. I am no Bob Woodward, and we are not talking Deep Throat here. He is none other than.....

Pinnochio? Yes, believe it or not Pinnochio is intensely jealous of the Bush Administration. You see Pinnochio’s claim to fame is that his nose got longer and longer as he told more and more lies. Well, Pinnochio must be intensely jealous, and feeling what amounts to an inferiority complex when he looks at Bush and his team spinning their web of lies and misinformation, because their noses are by far longer than his, and growing longer by the minute, especially when they are on TV or providing 'information' to mainstream media. Poor Pinnochio. I feel really sorry for the guy, and wish there was something I could do to help, but he is totally out of his league when it comes to George Bush and his posse.

Starting from the top. Bush and his Administration came out with the story that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction. Around the time when Bush addressed the United Nations, he displayed pictures that he claimed were sites of weapons of mass destruction production. Hans Blix immediately countered this saying it was untrue, and the sites in the photos were facilities he and his team had visited in earlier inspections, closed down, and had rendered totally inactive. Undeterred, Bush continued, upping the ante and claiming that Iraq possessed nuclear weapons. This was found to be a lie a few weeks ago when nuclear weapons inspector El Baradei concluded that Iraq had no nuclear weapons. Bush insisted, telling America and the world that Saddam was intent on nuclear weapons because he had purchased aluminum tubes for radioactive processing for making nuclear bombs. Bush knew all along this was untrue. El Baradei concluded that the aluminum tubes possessed by Iraq were 81mm. Exactly the size of Iraqi missiles, and totally unsuited for nuclear processing. So we have a situation where the two most prominent UN weapons inspectors have concluded that statements by the President of the United States are untrue.

At his drama presentation before the United Nations last week Colin Powell, with his little vial and suggestion, totally misled Americans to believe that Iraq was somehow connected to the anthrax attack on America, that was concentrated in Washington. This is thoroughly untrue, because every expert in bioweapons has confirmed that Iraq does not have the milling capacity to produce the finely powdered form of anthrax seen in the attack. Despite this knowledge, Powell obfuscated fact to such extreme, resulting in a lie to the American people. He added to this in reporting that Iraq was working in concert with Al Qaeda. everyone knows this to be untrue, yet Powell reported it as irrefutable fact.

The matter of terrorist threats, and how they are foisted on the American public is an example of how the Bush Administration deceives its citizens. We are currently under an increased threat of terrorism, with the warning code moved up from yellow to orange. The threat was arrived at due to intercepted increased 'chatter' in the Arab world. That was the reason given. Even the NBA All Star game was considered as a potential target. That event has come and gone this weekend. Now, today, the Administration is saying that the threat was put in place largely because Jewish interests were primarily targeted. No mention was made of this when the alert was first instituted. Can we have the truth here?

This week British Prime Minister Tony Blair was found to have lifted word for word from a document for his dossier of Iraqi weapons of mass destruction. Mention of Blair is necessary because he is, by his words and actions, an extension of the Bush Administration. At home he is called 'Bush's poodle.' Nelson Mandela referred to him as the US Foreign Minister. So now, not only do we have boldfaced lies, but we also have to contend with plagiarism as well.

Some days ago, while in Tennessee, Bush informed Americans that new evidence suggested Saddam Hussein was planning to use his people as human shields in a war. No source of the evidence was given, and we were expected to accept it as fact. We should not. In the Persian Gulf War, Bush senior made the same accusation. Now, Bush is being taken to task for potential high loss of Iraqi life in a US attack. The way to get around this is to claim that Saddam is putting his people out front as shields. This way when Iraqi blood begins to run at the hands of America, Bush can have Americans believe that it was because of Saddam putting his people out front as human shields. Don't buy this for a minute, because after the Persian Gulf War, at no time did the US military high command come out and say their mission was hampered because they had to deal with people used as human shields. They should have, if that had been a problem. What they did say was that they used precision munitions in battle and were exemplary in minimizing loss of life. When asked for an estimate of the loss of life the military, specifically General Swarzkopf, responded that 'we will never know.' Americans were lied to, because the Red Cross calculated that scores of Iraqis had died at the hands of American forces in that war.

Bush definitely consults his father, especially on this proposed Iraqi action. It is inconceivable that he was not advised to tell Americans that Saddam plans to use his people as human shields. The lie worked quite well before. Why not use it again? Also Bush claimed that Saddam was positioning his troops among the general populace in his human shield accusation. How disingenuous. If American troops were to invade Iraq it would be a different kind of war than the previous Persian Gulf War. This war would be an urban battle, fought in the streets. Strategy in such a battle calls for Iraqi forces to be placed in towns, streets, and communities as they mount a defense. It is totally underhanded for Bush to mislead his citizens into believing that, by this deployment of Iraqi forces, Saddam was intent on using his people as human shields.

Now we have Bin Laden on a tape talking about the war on Iraq, and telling the Iraqis to repel Americans. Powell seized on this as 'evidence' that a connection exists between Hussein and Al Qaeda. Once again Powell is attempting to suggest something to us as fact when it is not. Actually, in the tape Bin Laden verifies his disdain for Saddam Hussein. The tape shows no connection between Iraq and Al Qaeda. The truth is that Al Qaeda is probably lying in wait in striking distance of Iraq, licking its chops and waiting for the fireworks to begin so they can go to work, creating mayhem among American forces in the confusion.

In essence we have been lied to, deceived, misinformed, had documents confiscated so we are unable to verify the truth, and conned into believing that plagiarized document are original facts. Pinnochio was a novice at lying, and that was his only specialty. The people we are talking about have branched into avenues of deceit that were unimaginable and impossible for him to attain. And their victims? The honest hardworking people of America, in search of truth.
