Democratic Sen. Paul Wellstone, his wife Sheila and daughter Marcia died Friday in a small plane crash near Eveleth, Minnesota, that also killed three staff members and two pilots.
 The plane went down in 'snowy' rain and then burst into flames in a wooded area about 7 miles east of Eveleth-Virginia Municipal Airport. Officials said the last contact with the plane was at 10:20 a.m. CDT when the plane was about 2 miles from the airport.
Federal investigators searched the wreckage of a small plane for clues Saturday into the crash that killed Sen. Paul Wellstone.
Senator's death may put Bush in control 27/10/02
Senator Wellstone, 58, was in the midst of a tight re-election battle with Republican Norm Coleman, the former mayor of St Paul, in a race seen as crucial in determining which party controls the Senate.
Senator Wellstone's death could have an impact on the November 5 congressional elections because Democrats control the Senate by only one vote. He had seized a slight lead in recent opinion polls in his bid for a third six-year term.

Before we all get sucked into George W. Bush's eulogies of the late Minnesota Senator Paul Wellstone let us not forget what his father, Bush 41, called the Senator at a White House reception for newly-elected members of Congress in 1991.
Wellstone, who ran on a progressive platform, did not think Bush 41 cared one wit about education, health care, and workers' safety issues.
So when Wellstone met Bush in a typical White House pro forma reception line, he used the occasion to urge Bush on three different occasions to spend more time on issues like education and cautioning him against the Persian Gulf War. Of course, Bush was more concerned about fighting the war against Iraq (sound familiar?) and could care less about Wellstone's issues.
After Wellstone violated Bush 41's sanctimonious White House protocol, Bush was overheard saying, "Who is this chicken shit?" Continue...

Remember when journalism was a noble profession, a barrier between the truth and the truth-destroyers? In 2002, what we get from the corporate media is not news, but a twisted, selective account of current events, carefully engineered and designed to lull us into a false sense of security. In a word, propaganda.
Today the media put on sad faces for the death of Senator Paul Wellstone, who died in a plane crash in Minnesota, along with wife Sheila, daughter Marcia, 3 members of his staff, and both pilots. The talking heads mentioned "bad weather", but weather.com reported light drizzle, unlimited visibility and 3 mph winds just 2 hours after the crash. There was light snow reported earlier, but what Minnesota pilot could not fly under those conditions?
With the death of one of the last and best hopes for the Democratic Party, can there by any doubt of what Americans are up against? Is Paul Wellstone is dead because his seat was critical to Democratic control of the Senate? We are facing an enormous evil, the kind of malevolence that Adolph Hitler embraced with the systematic murder of 11 million souls. When you consider that much of the Bush family's wealth and power came from Prescott Bush's business dealings with Nazi Germany, then the assertion of Baptist minister and talk radio host Chuck Baldwin, that "George Bush and his fellow travelers compose the greatest threat to freedom and constitutional government that exists," has the ring of truth.
You're never going to get the whole truth about anything from our current media. We have the Internet, fortunately. We have sites like GWBush.com, Democrats.com and DemocraticUnderground, among a myriad of others, to keep us aware. But a large number of American voters have no Internet. Many Americans have taken their rights for granted for so long, they don't see that they are losing those rights at an alarming pace.
Spread the word - seek out people at home, at work and even on the street, and talk to them. There is still time to volunteer for your local chapter of the Democratic Party, to make telephone calls to registered Democrats, to drive people to the polls.
Can our votes stop the rising tide of Republican corruption, if our votes are not counted, or unfairly denied? Republicans have already started trying to steal what they cannot win, with programming tricks and good old fashioned intimidation of minority voters. Maybe we can't stop their attempts to steal votes and disenfranchise voters, but with a big enough turnout at the polls, we can overcome their dirty tricks and restore Democracy.
Let the death of Senator Wellstone galvanize us. And above all, be watchful. Remember Florida, and keep your eyes on the elephant. They've shown that they'll stop at nothing, but we are millions strong.
