  • "More Terror" in Honduras, as Another Unionist Murdered

    The body of 29-year-old Vanessa Yamileth Zepeda, still dressed in her nurse's scrubs and killed by a bullet, turned up in the Loarque neighborhood of Tegucigalpa, Honduras, on February 4. Zepeda had young children and was a leader of the SITRAIHSS labor union (Workers Union for the Honduran Social Security Institute). She had been abducted that afternoon while leaving a union meeting.

    This morning's El Tiempo reported that the National Congress approved a resolution last night that will ask the new Minister of Government, Africo Madrid, to, at the next cabinet meeting, ask the cabinet to approve a decree that revokes PCM-124-2009 pushed through by the Micheletti administration last October, a decree that restricted the freedom of speech of broadcast media in Honduras.   • Tortured legitimacy

    President Jose Manuel Zelaya's push for constitutional reform had nothing to do with a quest for re-election, and, indeed, it was only a cover for the coup-plotters' real aim - rolling back his social reforms. The new Lobo government, seen by many Hondurans as a consolidation of the coup, will reopen mining concessions, the majority of which are owned by Canadian companies.

  • Update on Honduras

    It now appears that no action will be taken to hold those responsible for the June coup in Honduras accountable either for their actions in deposing a democratically elected president or for the large number of documented human rights abuses which took place during the period of the de facto government which ruled the country until elections last November.
