Honduras Coup - Day 223 - February 05, 2010

  • Honduras: The resistance is in the streets
    By greenleft.org.au : February 05, 2010
The resistance has two principal pillars. There is a social pillar for people's rights, in which the resistance accompanies people in their daily struggle for agrarian reform, just salaries, and opposition to the privatisation of social services. This is the pillar of social mobilisation. The other pillar is the political arm – to convert ourselves into a militant political force which will work towards taking political power.

  • US support for Lobo government undermines Latin American democracy
    By John Green - jurist.law.pitt.edu : February 05, 2010
"When Honduran President Porfirio Lobo predictably chose several days ago to pardon the military leaders involved in the June 28, 2009 coup against his predecessor, President Manuel Zelaya, he was staying true to traditional Central American form. Lobo, who supported the coup, was "elected" under conditions that seem to take the region back to the heady Cold War days of the 1980s, Ronald Reagan, Contras, and Honduras' very own death squad, the Battalion 3-16. The majority of Hondurans boycotted the elections, as did reputable international observers. Many candidates for other offices withdrew, and despite State Department insistence that the process was perfectly transparent, the UN declared that conditions for a fair election were not present. And just to further dramatize the scene, there were various political assassinations before and after the contest.

  • Consolidating the Coup in Honduras
    By counterpunch.org : February 05, 2010
Pepe Lobo, Imperialism and the Resistance
A country of sharp inequality and class polarization, Honduras recently returned to the frontlines in the battle for Latin America's soul. The terrain of struggle has shifted on multiple occasions over the last seven months, following the military coup against the democratically-elected President, Manuel "Mel" Zelaya. The battle entered its latest phase last week with the ascension to power of Porfirio "Pepe" Lobo. Lobo was inaugurated on January 27, following his victory in the fraudulent November 29 election last year. Hundreds of thousands of Hondurans greeted the inauguration with a spirited march through the capital, Tegucigalpa, against the coup and his presidency.

  • Zelaya Criticizes Foes from Exile in Dominican Republic
    By democracynow.org : February 05, 2010
Manuel Zelaya: "Those who want to put me on trial are my adversaries. They are not judges. Those who have not wanted to start a legal process, lift one finger against murderers, criminals, those who torture Hondurans and who continue torturing them and myself, who was attacked at a diplomatic venue, they can't judge anybody."

  • Spanish Ambassador Returns to Honduras to Normalize Relations

  • Honduran Resistance in the Streets of Tegucigalpa
Rafael Alegría Interviewed by Jeffery R. Webber
    By socialistproject.ca : February 05, 2010
Hundreds of thousands of Hondurans took to the streets on Wednesday, January 27 to protest the inauguration of Porfirio "Pepe" Lobo Soza. Lobo was the victor in fraudulent elections held last November and his new regime is seen by the Honduran resistance as a continuation and consolidation of the coup regime that first came to power by overthrowing democratically-elected President, Manuel Zelaya, on June 28, 2009. During the march I caught up with Rafael Alegría, a key leader in the National Resistance Front, and a leading Honduran figure in the international peasant movement, Vía Campesina.

  • "General Considerations about Amnesty": Efraín Moncada Silva
    By hondurasculturepolitics.blogspot.com : February 05, 2010
In an editorial published in Honduras' La Tribuna, Efraín Moncada Silva, Honduran law authority and former member of the Zelaya administration, takes the opportunity to add to a series of commentaries he has pursued since amnesty was first proposed as part of the San Jose Accord. While, as he mentions, until it is published in La Gaceta, we do not have a text to comment on directly, Moncada Silva notes there are broader general principles we can discuss.

We met with GLBTI activists at the office of Kukulcan. The organization is named after the Mayan god of the sun. It represents the beginning of a new era, a new dawn for society. The organization works with diverse sexualities and gender issues. We met with Eric, the human rights organizer for Kukulcan. We also met with Sandra from the Association for a Better Life for people affected by HIV/AIDS in Honduras and other representatives of the LBGTI community from the Violet Collective and other organizations. We asked them about the effect of the coup on the LBGTI community and their perspectives on the situation and the future.
