The State's Case against the Jamaat

On July 25, 1994, the State filed a writ against 114 members of the Jamaat, including its leader Yasin Abu Bakr, for destruction of its properties. It originally claimed about $60 million in damages. Fifty-eight out of 114 Jamaat members were served with the State's writ and entered an appearance. The others were never served.

On September 16, 1996, the State obtained judgment in default against the 58 members after they failed to provide a defence to the State's claim. On September 19, the State indicated that it was not proceeding against the remaining Jamaat members, who were not served.

THE State closed its case yesterday after putting forward its claim for millions of dollars against the Jamaat al Muslimeen for destruction of the former police headquarters during the 1990 attempted coup.

Its only witness, Robert Beard, a former assistant Commissioner of Valuators, completed his evidence yesterday. He began on Monday.

On Tuesday, attorneys will present their closing arguments before Justice Joseph Tam in the Port-of-Spain Civil Chamber Court, Hall of Justice.
